(Port) Wine of the month December 2017: Niepoort Colheita 1912
After a recent visit to Southampton and the Titanic museum I could not get the outstanding Vintage 1912 out of my head. So I decided to open the last remaining Niepoort Colheita 1912 together with many Portuguese enologists (one of them being Dirk Niepoort who’s great-grandfather must have made the wine). After some 50 years in the cask and some more 50 years in the bottle this Port was incredibly fresh and concentrated. Deep dark brown colour with an intense core. Complex, but balanced bouquet with lots and lots of coffee and malt. The palate also showed much pressure and an enormous freshness with honey, malt and coffee. An almost never ending aftertaste. The big thing about this Port was the combination of complexity and balance. 20/20
